Activities

Activity #1 – Creating Word Problems
It is your turn to put together the data you collected on Amuzers Dream Park to create a word problem based on your knowledge of the order of operations.  Please follow these steps when creating your word problem:
1)    Use data from at least one of the six areas to create your word problem. You can also add your own information into your word problems, but that information must be used with the data on Amuzers Dream Park.
2)    Select a few key words from the beginning of the book to help you word your problems.
3)    Include at least three of the following operations in your numerical expressions:

Parenthesis
Exponents
Multiplication
Division
Addition
Subtraction
4)    Write in complete sentences and provide all the information needed to solve the problem.
5)    Upload your word problem onto the blog by posting it as a comment under the page of the book it relates to.

Activity #2 – Answering Word Problems

After uploading your word problem onto the blog, you must answer three classmates’ word problems by replying to their comments.  Make sure to complete the following:
1)    Select a word problem that is not your own
2)    Show your work in your math notebooks when solving the problem
3)    Comment on the word problem to upload just your answer, including the units
4)    Repeat steps 1-3 for two other word problems

Activity #3 – Creating Star Word Problems

If you completed activities # 1 and #2, feel free to step up your game with this activity.  Try doing Activity #1 again, except you have to use data from at least three sections of Amuzers Dream Park.  Also, you have to all six of the operations (PEMDAS).  When you finish creating this word problem, upload it onto the blog as a Star Word Problem, because the difficulty level was taken up a notch.

See You Again!

Tour Through Section Six

Tour Through Section Five

Tour Through Section Four

Tour Through Section Three

Tour Through Section Two

…welcome to Lunarland, the second section of the six!  The theme of this section is the moon, as you can tell with the rocky landscape and the main attraction, Moonlight OX.  Moonlight OX is the tallest roller coaster in Amuzers Dream Park, with the summit, or top, of the ride reaching the amazing height of 425 feet.  Riding the Moonlight OX feels like riding in a rocket ship during take-off; the rocket ship soars, or flies high, into the sky and into space, and lands on the moon with great speed.  After getting on the ride, the roller coaster escalates, or increases, in speed and takes 30 seconds to run its course.  I’ll bet you that it will be one of the most thrilling 30 seconds of your life!  Furthermore, Moonlight OX can fit up to 27 people, with three people sitting in one row.  The wait time for the ride is pretty long, even if the ride is only 30 seconds, because Moonlight OX attracts a large crowd, and it takes two minutes for the new set of people to get settled in their seats.

If your stomach begins to growl or your throat begins to feel dry, make sure to visit the Crater Vendor.  At the Crater Vendor, you can purchase a small “ME size” ice cream bar in the shape of a crescent moon for $3, or a jumbo “US size” tub of ice cream in a container shaped like the full moon for $8.  You can pick from a large selection of flavors, and my favorite is the sweet and simple vanilla ice cream.  Moreover, at the Crater Vendor, the beverages you can purchase are identical to what was listed before:  an AMUZER souvenir cup for $12, $1 for each refill in the AMUZER souvenir cup, and a bottled drink at the price of $3.  In the course of one day, I can go through seven refills of my souvenir cup!

If you have time later, you can look through the rest of this section in greater detail.  However, time is ticking and we still have much more of the park to cover!  Thus, let’s move right along to section three…

Tour Through Section One

…welcome to Wonderland!  As you can see, the main attraction is the Alice Kart Grand Prix, where visitors can race on the track in a go-cart.  The track has a total of 15 go-carts, which exhibit, or show, great speeds if the driver skillfully drives them down the track.  It takes around five minutes for the go-carts to travel throughout the entire course, or path, and each go-cart can fit up to two people within.  An adult must accompany any child that goes on the go-cart under the age of ten; therefore, young children must always drive safely with a companion, or partner.  Now that I am eleven-years-old, I can drive a go-cart on my own.  However, it sometimes takes a long time to wait on the line for this ride, because it takes five minutes for the go-carts to go through the course, and two minutes for the new set of people to enter the go-carts.  Nevertheless, it is never boring to wait on the line, as you and your friends make bets to see which go-cart will reach the finish line first for each round.

If you ever get hungry or thirsty while traveling through Wonderland, feel free to stop at the Mad Hatter vendor and buy something.  At the Mad Hatter vendor, you can purchase, or buy, a small “ME size” cotton candy in the shape of a bunny for $4, or a jumbo “US size” cotton candy in the shape of a cat for $7.  In addition, at the Mad Hatter vendor, you can purchase the following items to satisfy your thirst on any choice of drink:  an AMUZER souvenir cup for $12, $1 for each refill in the AMUZER souvenir cup, and a bottled drink at the price of $3.

Although there are many other attractions here in Wonderland, we will only be visiting the main attractions and vendors of each section.  Therefore, get ready for the next section…

Welcome!

Welcome, welcome!  Welcome to my home.  I live in an amusement park, which belongs to my family, the Amuzers.  Amuzers Dream Park is a place that combines dreams and fun, all in one package.  I heard from your teacher that your class is here today on a mission—to collect as much mathematical data as you can as you navigate, or find your way, through Amuzers Dream Park.  I am happy to be your guide, Kokoro Amuzer at your service!  I may be your age, but I am an expert in terms of all that there is to know about my home.   So come, come, there is no time to lose.  From the moment the park opens at 6 AM and closes at 10 PM, there is hardly enough time to thoroughly explore the entire park and all of its six sections.  Be prepared to jot down any questions for me, and to always have your knowledge of the order of operations at the ready.   As long as you know PEMDAS and keep in mind the key words from the “Word Problem Key Words List” you received earlier, I know you’ll do fine.  Now, let’s go onto the first section…
